The highlight of the trip" was how one diver described our first dive today. 'Tons of Sponge' is located between West Caicos and Northwest Point, and diveable only at slack high tide. The timing was right today and we were able to visit this beautiful site. A plethora of schooling fish carpeted the top of the wall and the reef; Snappers, Grunts, Creole Wrasse, Chubb, Blue Chromis, Atlantic Spadefish, Horse eyed Jacks...just to name a few. A large Spotted Drum, and a free swimming Spotted Moray caught the eyes of our vigilant divers, and several Southern Stingrays congregated in the sand under the boat. Our 2nd dive was at 'Razors Edge', where surge and tidal movement have created archways and swimthroughs for divers to explore. A highlight of this dive was finding a Nurse Shark resting inside a canyon. |

Area: Northwest Point

Excellent visiblity and an abundance of Marine life made this a great dive today. As we made our way to the 'start point' of the dive, a small Reef Shark was spotted cruising in the distance. Dropping through the 'crack', a large fissure in the wall, the view was breathtaking! Lined with Wire Coral, the divers glided through a school of Horse Eyed Jacks as they exited out to the sheer wall. Shortly after, a 2nd reef shark made an appearance, cruising slowly by allowing everyone to have a good look at this graceful creature. Our 2nd dive was at the Amphitheatre, another favourite site, where divers enjoyed the beautiful wall and healthy coral and fish life. |

Site: Chimney
Area: Northwest Point

The tides and conditions were in our favour today as we headed out to Northwest Point. The Chimney, a favourite dive site named for the crevice that leads out to the wall, delighted our divers. The usual schooling fish were in abundance...Creole Wrasse and Blue Chromis were teaming on top of the reef, sihouetted against the beautiful azure backdrop of the abyss behind them. As we explored the edge of the wall, we were excited to see two Caribbean Reef Sharks cruise by! Later in the dive, a Hawksbill Turtle graced us with her presence (her?)...and as we peered over the turtle we were once again delighted to see yet another Caribbean Reef Shark swimming by! Our 2nd dive was at "Real Mans Wall", where great visibility and an outstanding variety of marine life gave divers plenty to talk about when they were back on board. |

Site: Whiteface (aka The Anchor)
Area: West Caicos
|
The wind subsided a little today, making the diving conditions at West Caicos outstanding. Our first stop at the Anchor, treated divers to ample marine life, including 2 adult Spotted Drums. Cruising through the swimthrough that houses 'the anchor', and exiting out in to the deep blue of the wall, our divers couldn't help but be awestruck by the dramatic beauty. Our 2nd dive at "Coney Island", a shallow dive that is FULL of critters, pleased everyone by conjuring up a Spotted Moray and several Southern Stingrays (one with no tail!). Divers enjoyed some extra bottom time here due to the shallow depth, and spend it exploring and enjoying the colourful reef. Giant Sea Anemones filled in the crevices, and the sea fans waved back and forth in the gentle surge. Tranquility! |

Boat: Flamingo Spirit
Site: Driveway (aka Skislope)
Area: West Caicos
|
Slightly windier conditions today made for a little choppy water, but conditions for diving at West Caicos were still outstanding. Our first dive at 'driveway', so named for the sand shute that leads divers out to the wall, was an exciting start to the week as some of our divers experienced a 'wall dive' for the first time! Schooling fish carpeted the top of the reef, and some Spiny Lobsters couldn't hide from our divers' keen eyes. After a surface interval spent snorkelling in the shallows, it was back out to "Magic Mushroom" for our 2nd plunge. Large Barrel Sponges and healthy hard and soft corals covered the reef and wall, making for lots of nooks and crannies to explore. |
